In our kindergarten classes we offer a stimulating educational environment in which children can develop their German and English language skills through inquiry, in a nurturing environment.

Each classroom is staffed with at least one German and one English teacher working together. These qualified teachers consistently speak to children in just their native language so that daily activities, songs and games are led in German or English by the respective German or English speaking teacher.

This exposure provides an opportunity to learn how to clearly understand, and separate, the linguistic structures of each language, while developing the ability to express themselves in both. As a candidate school, and as guided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme’s (PYP) Standards and Practices, BKA International School is implementing this chosen curriculum by doing the following:

  1. Establishing a firm foundation in the core subjects of Language (English/German), as well as Maths, Social Studies and Science which are learned through the Units of Inquiry;
  2. Enriching the curriculum through specialist classes that connect to the Units of Inquiry, including the Arts, Library and Physical Education
  3. Enabling students to promote their own international mindedness through the Learner Profile and the opportunity to take action;
  4. Responding to the individual intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs of students.

In Kinder 1 and Kinder 2, the PYP essential elements are highlighted and introduced in learning engagements that use the environment as a teacher. These first years of schooling are critical to a child’s development as they explore early literacy, numeracy and the world around them and through Units of Inquiry that incorporate the arts, PSPE, science and social studies concepts.

The programme is inquiry-based with a transdisciplinary approach, and aims to develop five essential elements:

  1. Concepts are the powerful ideas that have relevance within the subject areas. These overarching ideas transcend individual subjects and link the programme, enabling students to explore and re-explore them to gain an in-depth, coherent understanding.
  1. Knowledge is the significant and relevant content that we believe students should explore and know. This element has six discreet subject areas including Mathematics, Language (English & French), Social Studies, Science, PSPE (Personal, Social and Physical Education) and the Arts. Each of these subject areas then further outlines the overall expectations at each age range. These six subjects are then encompassed by six “transdisciplinary themes” that are considered essential to international education.  These themes are covered each year, in every grade level (with the exception of Preschool and KG1 which cover four per year) through integrated Units of Inquiry and include Who We Are, How We Express Ourselves, Where We Are in Place and Time, How the World Works, How We Organise Ourselves and Sharing the Planet.
  1. Skills are taught as we recognise that in the need to be lifelong learners, we must equip students with the necessary skills for learning. The skills emphasized within the programme include thinking skills, social skills, communication skills, self-management skills and research skills.
  1. Attitudes are the dispositions that are the expressions of values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people including appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance.
  1. Action is the final essential element and it is the demonstration of deeper learning through responsible behaviour. Action is how students show that they have put the other four essential elements together in their own lives and done something with the skills, knowledge, concepts and attitudes they have learned.
